intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) :
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection-ICSI is the injection of the sperms directly into the eggs acquired from IVF. There are five basic steps, first- specialized pipettes are used to hold mature eggs, second- single sperms are immobilized and picked up by hollow needles, third- needle is inserted carefully through the shell of the into the cytoplasm of the egg, four- after the injection of the sperm into the cytoplasm the needle is very carefully pulled out, five- eggs are checked that very same day for normal fertilization. ICSI is usually done in the case of male infertility like- low sperm count, low motility of sperm, poor sperm quality, the inability of sperm to penetrate and egg or Azoospermia which means no sperm in male ejaculation.
Azoospermia is of two types, obstructive or nonobstructive. Obstructive Azoospermia is caused because of vasectomy, congenital absence of Vas and scarring from prior infections. Non- obstructive Azoospermia is in cases of the defective testicle; in this usable sperm count is low. A possibility of sperm donor can be considered in such cases.
